turbo bricks from ebay

Hi. I have a turbo brick. got her off ebay. drove her home from texas. so awesome. She's a S80 t6. shes my first volvo. volvos rock. wanted one ever since being the only road warrior left in a blizzard. everyone was in the ditch. i have a question about my car. it might be nothing ... or it might be something. I noticed when its idle it occasionally clears its throat. I mean, for a split second it sounds like a deisel. and it always runs smooth at high speeds. is this car meant to run better at high speeds or is it possible that at low speeds i notice that occasionally a cylinder might be missing a beat? the "prob" is inconsistant. its a six cylinder. any thoughts, anyone?

EEK! Sorry to inform you...but you have a peice of italian machinery on your car.

When you her "Italian Machinery" you probably think "pasta rockets!"

But alas, no...Ford was pushing Volvo to release these cars with the electronic throttle system, and they got them released, but they did not take the time to make sure these things would be reliable.

Well, it seem that...these throttle bodies over heat and malfuncation, making it where your car will not go over 10mph or making the transaxle shift weird or making the car not run at all.

Lucky for you, it seems to be more of a problem on the S60s than the S80s.

Good luck with it, and that occasional "diesel" thing is prolly the throttle body computer adjusting to everything it takes into account to set idle speed. Possibly the AC clutch cycling.

Also, remember, take this car to a Volvo dealership for service (atleast for the T-belt and transaxle) becuase the engine is an amazing peice of machinery that requires you change the timing belt every time or before the manual calls for it (if this belt breaks, it gets expensive becuase valves hit pistons.) and done by someone that knows what they are doing, and the transaxle needs to have the right people working on it becuase it takes a very special fluid, and if the wrong kind id put in, you wont go much farther. (New kind it takes just has a serial number, its in your owners manual, people have been caught putting Dexron/Mercon in there, bad move!)

But, even though theres ONE big bad thing about that car, other than that, theyre amazing! I love the rides, the T6s are KILLER highway drivers, and its still a Volvo! Keep it serviced and it will run forever!

ahem. not that i have anything against new volvos (my parents have an s60) they are NOT 'bricks.' because, well, they're not brickish. to me a brick is a redblock / rwd.

Thank You so Much!

that information was totally useful! way to go Ford... I have also heard rumors that since ford bought volvo my heated seats might be catching fire ... waiting in anticipation. I heard a rumor that I could change the chip out and have a new chip put in that would get it to behave like an R series. Would a different chip help the throttle thing? and is it true that if your turbos get hot that you should let the car idle before you turn off the ignition? I get a lot of leakage around mt turbos.

although my car is not the classic brick shape, she's still got the heart of a brick. the roads get so icey here in winter and she tracks so straight. its the ultimate winter car.

Re: Thank You so Much!

that's no rumor - ipd sells chip replacements for a thousand or so that will give you a pretty significant boost in both hp and torque. it's best if you change the exhaust system as well for the best performance, which goes for a few thousand. it won't be like an R exactly since it's a completely different engine, but it'll translate into some serious power. as it is the t6 cooks. usually i let my s60 idle for a minute or so before i turn it off so oil can get to the turbo.

and the whole 'brick' thing is just me being anal but a good and proper brick is a 1, 2, 7, or 9 series. they're actually not that good in winter weather. rear wheel drive. four cyl and doesn't have shit to do with ford. the only similarities common to my 240 and s60 is that they're safe and they're blue. otherwise they are completely different cars.
